"Create your own board game" activity

Responsibilities: Instructional Design
Target Audience: Instructional designers, High school teachers, Tutors
Tools Used: Miro board, Medium
Year: 2022

Project description

WHAT?

The idea of the activity is that the learners create their own educational board game and after that make a portfolio with description and reflection of the project. This activity can be carried out for any school/university subject.

WHY?

From the teacher’s standing point during creating educational board game students:
1) learn about the design thinking process, the stages of project creation;
2) learn how to structure and explain material to their peers;
3) realize their creative potential;
4) motivate students who may not show up for regular classes (students who draw, play games, are into design, etc. can show up here).

From the student standing point by the end of the project, students will:
1) repeat, systematize, and assimilate subject knowledge;
2) learn to apply the project approach and design thinking process in their work;
3) create an educational board game.

HOW?

At the beginning I was inspired of "students as teachers" practice, "project-based learning" and "student portfolios" practices from "Co-designing schools toolkit". And I had a thought how learners can make their own board game during studying. The main part for teachers is to organize that kind of learning process. It can be tough, so my article will help.

To make this project I used Miro board for planning the learning process stages and getting feedback from my professional community. Then I wrote the article on Medium to explain the whole process in details (you can look at the article through the hyperlink).
